Chargers Shoot Season-Low 307 to Close Skyhawk Classic

The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team bounced back from a disappointing Friday to post a season-low score Saturday in the Skyhawk Classic.

The Chargers shot 339 in Friday’s opening round at Lake Carroll in Lanark but recovered with a season-best 307 in Saturday’s second round at Rock River Country Club. Sandburg’s score Saturday was the third-lowest of the day and moved the Chargers up to seventh in the nine-team tournament with a total of 646.

Black Hawk Gold’s two-day score of 623 won by five strokes over Sauk Valley. Sandburg finished nine shots back of sixth-place Waubonsee.

Sophomore Brayden Reece (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) shot 78 on Friday and 74 on Saturday to tie for fifth overall. Reece finished with a 33 on his back nine in Saturday’s round. Black Hawk’s Rielly McGranahan was medalist with rounds of 76 and 70 to win by two over teammate Jake Luett.

Chargers sophomore Bryce Grafton (Orion, Ill./Orion) shot 75 on Saturday to finish at 163 for the weekend. Brother Brady Grafton (Orion, Ill./Orion) also scored in the 70s on Saturday, carding a 78 that left him at 165 for the tournament.

Freshman Grant Campbell (Earlville, Ill./Earlville) shot 86-80 for the Chargers, and freshman Matt Graves (Oneida, Ill./ROWVA) had rounds of 90 and 85.

The Chargers are in action again today for the Eureka College Classic at 11 a.m. at Weaver Ridge in Peoria.
